A Christmas in the Purest Tradition of Provence

For the past three years, Jacqueline and Axel, owners of a guesthouse in Le Thor, Provence, have been preparing for this traditional Provencal Christmas. The “big supper,” Midnight Mass, the 13 desserts ritual… The couple has planned everything so that their guests will enjoy an unforgettable experience.

As soon as Jacqueline and Axel opened their bed and breakfast in Le Thor, Provence three years ago, they wanted to reproduce the "true Provençal Christmas" as they knew it.

On December 24th, their guests will be able to enjoy the “big supper,” the distinctive Christmas dinner consisting of seven lean dishes including cardoon gratin and pumpkin soup. The table is set with three white tablecloths of different sizes on which is placed a little “wheat of Saint Barbara” and a three-tiered candlestick.

After this hearty meal, they head to midnight mass and its living nativity scene composed of an ox, a donkey and even a camel! After this religious celebration guests can enjoy the traditional 13 Christmas desserts of Provence, including grapes, nuts and calissons.

After a good night’s sleep in one of the four rooms of their guesthouse, each with its own décor (Provencal, Mediterranean, seventies or loft-style), guests and owners will sit down together to enjoy a brunch served by Father Christmas himself!
